Father's Day

You are probably aware that today is Father's Day. At least I hope you are and have celebrated the men in your life. I could write a post about how amazing my Dad is, I am incredibly lucky to have a great Father who has supported me and been an example to me throughout my life.

Instead I am going to write about My Handsome Man.

It surprises people when I tell them I get something for him for Father's Day. They query why because he's not a father, yet. Before anyone gets any ideas, this is not a pregnancy announcement.

I understand the surprise. Celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day when we're not parents probably sets us apart from most other childless couples.

If my health situation were different, we might already be parents, but that isn't to be, for now.

When we were dating, like most couples, we discussed our plans for the future. The serious, life-defining things like his desire to one day own a Bentley. We talked about our hopes of having a family, how he wants a child he can teach to play football and watch 'Match of the Day' with - a relationship similar to the one he has with his Father.

Then, in Switzerland, he got down on one knee and I said "Yes", yes to him being my husband. I believe that marriage is forever. By saying yes to marrying him I was also saying yes to spending my life with him, to having a family with him and to him being the father and role model for any future children.

I am so grateful to him for being the man that I want to spend my life with and raise a family with. I am grateful for the qualities I see in him. I want to celebrate those qualities and acknowledge him for the man he is. I have chosen him to a be a father to my children so it seems natural to celebrate him alongside the other fathers in our lives.
